Manage Your Goals

How to edit your expectations and happily attain your goals.

A great way to do this, and particularly at the start of a new year or a new month, is to begin with a list of your 'goals'.

But hold on, because this list will receive a little editing.

  • Firstly, write down any goal you feel drawn towards. Don't filter (yet), if you want to become CEO of your own company or complete a full marathon, write it down.
  • Secondly, next to each item on the list, note down where you believe this goal (or expectation) might be from? Yourself, social media, your family, any personal anxiety around work? Try to identify whether each goal is from a healthy or unhealthy source?
  • Thirdly, after identifying the source of each goal, cross out the ones which no longer appear healthy to strive for.
  • Lastly, let's add a touch of realism. With your remaining (hopefully much shorter) list of goals and expectations, make any edits that will make your list more attainable.  For example, instead of aiming to tackle yoga every day at 5am, maybe block out Monday and Friday mornings to ease yourself into it.

Goals and expectations can be an incredible source of inspiration and life planning, but can equally bring heartache, disillusion and feelings of failure.

So, remember to slow down the barrage of expectations you may be feeling, and take the time to clearly define what you'll allow inspire you.
